Parent Participation:

Meekins is a non-profit corporation run completely by the parent membership as a cooperative preschool. The school belongs to its members, and parents assume an active part in the management of the school’s affairs. The Board of Directors is made up of the Director (who also is a teacher) and parents elected annually by the membership. The Board hires the teaching staff, establishes the educational policy, formulates the budget, and generally supervises the business of the school. As part of a cooperative school, parents have a unique opportunity to work closely with the teachers in the classroom, to help create the kind of learning environment they would like for their children, and to participate in an active parent-education program.

As parents participate, they find that one of the prime benefits of the cooperative school is that it offers them an educational experience. They can observe their own child interacting with a group of youngsters the same age. They are able to observe the manner in which an objective and sympathetic professional teacher works with the children. They can see their child enjoying equipment and materials in a variety of ways. They can work creatively with a group where parents can make their influence count, and provide excellent help and supervision in an atmosphere that offers children a warm and sympathetic environment, and a marvelous variety of skills, backgrounds, and activities. Finally, they can share in the pride and enjoyment that their child gets from his or her preschool day.

Procedures for Dropping Off Children

1. At morning drop-off, the floater will take the children from parents’ cars into the school. This begins the day by emphasizing an important Meekins philosophy — that independence and self-reliance build self-esteem. Please allow your child to have this experience. Letting the floater escort the children from the car will ease the process of separation: it is easier for a child to leave a parent at the curb than to watch their parent leave him or her in the classroom. Of course, floaters will be sensitive to children’s needs or apprehensions, just as you will be when you are floater.

2. Children should arrive at 9:15 a.m. The floater will not be available to bring the children into the school until 9:10 a.m., so do not bring your children to school earlier, unless you are participating that day.

3. When you arrive, follow traffic around the parking lot and pull all the way forward to the end of the curb as others may arrive before you finish. Three cars can be at the drop-off curb at one time. The floater will escort your child from your car into the building. Sometimes the floater will be taking children into the building and may not immediately be waiting at the curb. Wait a few minutes to see if he or she comes back. If you decide that the floater is definitely not there, or if you arrive late and the floater has already started working inside the building, you should drive to a parking space, park, and escort your child to the door of the school.

4. Never leave a parked car in the carpool line for any reason. If you need to talk to another parent or need to go into the building, pull to a parking space after dropping off your child with the floater. Park your car and take your keys with you when you leave your car.

5. All cars must exit through the drop-off line.  No car may drive past the cars at the curb.

Procedure for Picking Up Children:

1. Arrive as close to 12:15 p.m. as possible. A staff member will have to wait with your child for you if you arrive late; please be considerate.

2. Pull into the first available space next to, not behind, other cars in the center line of parking spaces. Park — be sure to take your keys with you.  Do not park behind another car if you are in a hurry to leave.  You must wait to pull forward as backing up is not allowed when leaving the parking lot

3. If you need to install a carseat, do so before you go in to pick up child.

4. As you bring children into the parking lot, walk behind the parked cars.
